Scents and Their Remedial Properties

The remedial properties of aromatic plants and herbs been known about for thousands of years. Aromatherapy is a well-recognized therapeutic treatment for health conditions by the use of aromatic essential oils or scents. These aromatic essential oils are extracted from plants, such as herbs, flowers, trees, grasses, fruit and seeds.

The remedial properties of scents from essential oils are varied. The use of scents in essential oils has proven to have healing properties. These scents can help improve the immune system, and oxygenate the tissues of our bodies. They can be antiviral, antiseptic and antibacterial. Detoxification of the body can be brought about by the use of scents. In fact, each essential oil used in aromatherapy can have multiple remedial properties. These scents can help heal the body of illnesses while one is alive. The bible talks of frankincense; myrrh, hyssop and spikenard as treasures kings and wise men would give to honor others. The body in bible times was prepared for burial by the use of essential oils and their scents were of valued use when one died. Essential oils and their scents have been known to possess preservative properties as well as remedial properties.

Below are five basic essential oil scents and their remedial values or properties:

  1. Basil - Basil has a slight aroma reminiscent of licorice. It has remedial properties to relieve depression, poor immune systems, mental confusion, poor memory, headaches and sinusitis. Basil can relieve the inability to make decisions, and lack of trust or direction.

  2. Lavender - The name describes the scent. Lavender has remedial properties to regenerate new skin cells, can relieve burns and speed healing for burn injuries. Lavender is soothing and relaxing to the nerves. Lavender can relieve anxiety and insomnia. Helps reduce inflammation and treats infections. Lavender has antibacterial remedial properties as well.

  3. Chamomile - Chamomile has strong remedial properties to sooth frayed nerves, relives restlessness, irritability, insomnia and upset digestive systems. Chamomile can relieve constipation and help irritable bowel syndrome. Tones up the spleen and is good for skin problems such as eczema.

  4. Lemon - the scent of lemon has properties of antibacterial and antiviral natures. Lemon is remedial in detoxifying the liver. The scent of lemon helps clear cloudy thinking and is refreshing to the sprit. Lemon may help lower high blood pressure too.

  5. Peppermint - The remedial properties for peppermint are useful for the digestive system and mental clarity and improved brain functioning. Peppermint is used to treat nausea and indigestion, bowel problems, bloating and infections in the digestive tract. Peppermint is good to relieve bad breath also. Peppermint is a good remedy for feeling down, tired or sluggish. It is has very refreshing remedial properties.

Essential oil molecules are very tiny and that makes them able to penetrate the skin and also enter the lungs through inhaling these molecules. Once inhaled or absorbed thru the skin they enter into the bloodstream to carry out their healing properties to the many parts of the body.
